Notes |
Jaghmīnī’s al-Qānūnča (The “Little Qānūn”), a 10-part medical abridgement of Ibn Sīnā’s medical compendium (the Qānūn or Canon), played a prominent part in a medical education. An extant copy of the Qānūnča, dated 601/1205) indicates that al-Jaghmīnī composed it prior to the Mulakhkhaṣ. From its original composition (in Arabic), Jaghmīnī’s medical primer on the practice of Greek (Unani) medicine and its various commentaries and translations (Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Punjabi) continued to be studied and reproduced extensively into the 20th century throughout Anatolia as well as Central and South Asia. Many references erroneously give 745/1344-45 for Jaghmīnī’s date; for a detailed discussion of this error, see S. Ragep, Jaghmīnī’s Mulakhkhaṣ, pp. 5-26. |
