Notes

As A. Heinen noted (p. vii), the Egyptian Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505) hoped his al-Hayʾa al-saniyya fī al-hayʾa al-sunniyya would provide an Islamic cosmology (even appropriating the word hayʾa into his title) in contrast to (or co-existing with) the genre of astronomical literature termed `ilm al-hayʾa, which developed as early as the 11th-century in eastern Islam.
