Notes

In some manuscripts this work has been attributed to Fārābī.

In addition to this treatise, Ibn Sīnā’s attitude toward astrology is conveyed in the way he categorizes astronomy and astrology in his Aqsām al-ʿulūm al-ʿaqliyya. There astronomy is made an exact mathematical science whereas astrology is part of natural philosophy. Previously in both the Islamic and earlier Greek traditions, the two were usually put into the same category. This demarcation seems to be new with Ibn Sīnā, but it becomes fairly standard after him. Cf. Ragep, Ṭūsī's Memoir (Tadhkira) [1993], 1: 34-5.
